Osaka: Kompatibilitätstest zwischen Baffin und Gogo geglückt.

Am letzten Freitag, den 25. März 2011, wurde die neue „Braut“ von Gogo, dem sechsjährigen Eisbär des Tennoji Zoos in Osaka, der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Die Eisbärin Baffin ist 19 Jahre alt und wurde in Schweden im Tierpark Kolmården geboren. Bisher lebte sie im Hamamatsu Zoo, am 2. März traf sie in Osaka im Rahmen des Eisbärenzuchtprogramms von Japan ein. Baffin zeigte sich wenig beeindruckt von den über 100 Besuchern, die zu dem Pressetermin gekommen waren. Entspannt kletterte sie die Stufen zum Pool hinunter und spielte fröhlich mit einem Holzstück.

Last Friday, March 25, the new bride of Gogo, the 6-year-old polar bear at the Tennoji Zoo in Osaka, was presented to the public.  The female Baffin is 19 years old and was born in the Kolmården Wildlife Park in Sweden.  She had been living at the Hamamatsu Zoo, then on March 2,she arrived in Osaka in line with the Japanese polar bear breeding program.  Baffin displayed little interest in the hundred or so visitors who had come to her debut.  Unruffled, she climbed down the rocks into the pool and had a good time playing with a piece of wood.

Sakurako Ishii, ein sieben Jahre altes Mädchen aus der Chiba Präfektur, das zusammen mit ihren Eltern den Zoo besuchte, erzählte begeistert: „Die Art wie sie mit dem Holzblock spielte, sah aus, als ob sie viel Spaß hat. Ich freue mich schon darauf, wenn sie Babys hat.“

Bis es so weit sein wird, wird allerdings noch etwas Zeit vergehen. Gogo und seine neue Gefährtin hatten sich zunächst nur durch ein Schmusegitter begutachten können. Aber die Tierpfleger waren zuversichtlich, dass sie sich gut verstehen würden.

Visiting the zoo with her parents, Sakurako Ishii, a 7-year-old girl from the Chiba Prefecture, explained enthusiastically, „I saw how skillfully she played with the stick and how she has lots of space.  I’m looking forward to her having babies.“

After that had gone so well, there was no time to lose.  Gogo and his new partner were at first allowed to get acquainted through a grate.  Zookeepers were confident that they would understand each other well.

Man plante ursprünglich, dass in der nächsten Zeit Baffin und Gogo abwechselnd auf der Eisbärenanlage des Tennoji Zoos zu sehen sein sollten. Doch da sich die Tiere besser als gedacht zu verstehen schienen und durch den Zaun viel Interesse an einander zeigten, wagte man schon am 29. März den ersten „Kompatibilitätstest“, der positiv ausging. Gogo, der 2004 in Perm in Russland geboren wurde, und Baffin gingen spielerisch miteinander um. Wenn alles weiter so gut klappt, kann man in Osaka im nächsten Winter auf Eisbärennachwuchs hoffen.

It had originally been arranged that the next step would be to put rotate them in the Tennoji Zoo’s polar bear display.  But the animals showed more interest in each other through the fencem than expected, so on March 29 the first compatibility test was ventured.  Gogo, born in Perm, Russia, in 2004, and Baffin skirted each other playfully.  If all goes well, people in Osaka can hope for polar bear cubs next winter.
