Das ist Yupi. Sie lebt im Zoológico de Morelia, mit 24,5 Hektar der größte Zoo Mexikos. In ihm leben rund 3400 Tiere aus etwa 400 Arten. Darunter ein Eisbär, Yupi. Und am Schicksal Yupis scheiden sich die Geister.
This is Yupi. She lived in the Morelia Zoo, at sixty acres the largest zoo in Mexico. There they have around 3400 animals, representing something like 400 species. Among them is the polar bear Yupi. And Yupi’s fate is the parting of the ways.
Die Einen sind der Meinung, dass man in Mexiko keine Eisbären halten sollte, weil es dort zu heiß und zu trocken für sie ist. Zoocheck, eine Tierschutzorganisation aus Kanada, und die Grüne Partei Mexikos haben einen Antrag bei den lokalen Behörden der Stadt gestellt, den Eisbären an eine zoologische Einrichtung in Kanada abzugeben. Sie kritisieren die beengte Unterbringung des Tieres im Zoo und das zu kleine Wasserbecken. Es sei Tierquälerei einen Eisbären im Zoo einer Stadt mit tropischen Klima zu halten. Auf einer Internetseite Save Yupi machen sie auf das Schicksal der Eisbärin aufmerksam.
Some consider that there should be no polar bears in Mexico, because it’s too hot and too dry for them there. Zoocheck, an animal rights group in Canada and the Green Party of Mexico, have filed a request with local authorities, to move her to a zoological facility in Canada. They are critical of the cramped quarters the animal has at the zoo and her small pool of water. They claim it’s animal cruelty to keep her in a city with a tropical climate. On the website Save Yupi, they want to draw attention to the plight of this polar bear.
Die Anderen, die Behörde und der Zoodirektor Cuauhtémoc Hermenegildo García, sind der Auffassung, dass der Antrag unbegründet ist. Yupi lebt seit fast 20 Jahren im Zoo von Morelia und hat sich den dort herrschenden Klimaverhältnissen angepasst. Diese sind im übrigen nicht tropisch. Morelia liegt auf 1800 Meter über dem Meerespiegel und hat ein gemäßigtes Klima. Am wärmsten wird es im Mai, wo es bis zu 32° C warm wird. Im Jahresdurchschnitt werden Temperaturen erreicht, die man mit denen von San Diego vergleichen kann, allerdings regnet es im Sommer in Morelia deutlich mehr.
Others, authorities and Zoo Director Cuauhtémoc Hermenegildo García, are of the opinion that this claim is unfounded. Yupi has lived at the Morelia Zoo for nearly twenty years and has adapted to the climate, which is otherwise not tropical. Morelia is located 6000′ above sea level and has a temperate climate. The hottest month is May, when the temperature reaches 90°F. The annual average temperatures are comparable to San Diego, but it’s rainier in the summer in Morelia.

Laut dem internationalen Zuchtbuch wurde Yupi vermutlich im Winter 1989/1990 in Alaska geboren und dort im Mai 1990 verwaist aufgefunden. Sie kam zunächst in den Alaska Zoo in Anchorage. Am 10. April 1992 wurde sie nach Morelia gebracht. Der Zoodirektor befürchtet, dass ein Unzug nach Kanada die 22 Jahre alte Eisbärin überfordern und ihre Gesundheit gefährden würde. Der mexikanische Zoo hat in der vergangen Zeit einige Anstrengungen unternommen, die Unterbringung der Eisbärin zu verbessern. Mindestens zweimal in der Woche sorgt man mit besonderen Aktionen dafür, dass es Yupi im Zoo nicht langweilig wird. Sie darf lebendige Fische jagen, erhält Eisblöcke mit Fischen und es werden Duftspuren angelegt, um all ihre Sinne zu beschäftigen.
According to the international studbook, Yupi was probably born in Alaska in the winter of 1989-90, then found abandoned in May 1990. She was first at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage. On June 1, 1992, she was moved to Morelia. The Zoo Director fears that the move to Canada would overtax the 22-year-old polar bear and jeopardise her health. The Mexican zoo has made efforts in the past to improve the polar bear’s accommodation. At least twice a week, she is given enrichment items, so she will not be bored. She can chase live fish, receives blocks of ice with fish in them, and finds scent trails, created to stimulate all her senses.

Für die Zukunft plant man die Anlage zu verbessern. Yupi soll eine Sandkuhle erhalten, in der sie buddeln kann, und einen Wasserfall, um die Anlage zu kühlen. Außerdem plant man das Gehege mit einer Klimaanlage zu versehen, um vor allem in den heißen Sommermonaten die Temperatur um bis zu 6° C zu reduzieren. Die geplanten Baumaßnahmen sollen Kosten in Höhe von 5 Mio Pesos (300.000 €) verursachen, die aus Spenden finanziert werden. (Die Artikel im Internet sind hier widersprüchlich, eine andere Angabe spricht von 1,5 – 2 Mio Pesos, das sind 80.000 – 100.000 Euro.)
In future, they will improve the enclosure. Yupi will get a sand pit, where she can dig and a waterfall to keep her cool. They are also looking at an air-conditioned enclosure, reducing summer temperatures by 6°C. The plan will cost five million pesos (US$400,000 or 300,000€), which will have to be funded by donation. (The articles on the internet are contradictory, some speak of 1.5-2 million pesos (US$120,000-160,000 or 80,000-1000,000€).)
Eine Umfrage unter den Zoobesuchern ergab, dass sie ihre Eisbärin behalten wollen, es aber begrüßen, wenn ihre Anlage verbessert wird. José, ein achtjähriger Zoobesucher, erzählte, dass Yupi der erste Eisbär ist, den er gesehen hat und dass er hofft, dass noch viele Kinder sie besuchen können. Auch Yupi ist in Morelia eine wichtige Botschafterin dafür, dass man den fragilen Lebensraum der Eisbären schützen muss, denn: „Man schützt nur was man liebt – man liebt nur was man kennt.“ (Konrad Lorenz)

A survey of zoo visitors reveals that they want to keep the polar bear, but would welcome improvements to the facility. 8-year-old boy José, said that Yupi is the first polar bear he has seen and that he hopes many more children can visit. Yupi is also an important ambassador in Morelia, to represent the fragile habitat of polar bears since, „We only protect what we love, and we only love what we know“. (Konrad Lorenz)
