Der Saint Louis Zoo informiert auf seiner Facebookseite, dass der Eisbär Kali gesund und munter angekommen ist.
The St. Louis Zoo has announced on their Facebook page, that the polar bear Kali has arrived safe and sound.
Kurz nach Mitternacht am 5. Mai begann Kalis Reise im Buffalo Zoo im US Bundesstaat New York. Begleitet vom Raubtier Kurator des Saint Louis Zoos, einem Tierarzt und einem Tierpfleger aus dem Buffalo Zoo fand der erste Teil der Reise in einem FedEx Flugzeug statt. Das Logistikunternehmen führte den Transport unentgeltlich durch. Die Transportkiste aus Aluminium, in der Kali während des Transportes untergebracht war, wurde direkt hinter der Cockpitwand platziert, um es zu erlauben, Kali während des Flugs zu betreuen. Er bekam Wasser zu trinken und seine Begleiter konnten mit dem zweieinhalb Jahre alten Eisbären sprechen, um ihn in der für ihn ungewohnten Situation zu beruhigen. Steve Bircher, der Raubtierkurator des Saint Louis Zoos sagte: „Er hat das wirklich prima gemacht. Es hat sehr geholfen, dass die ihm vertrauten Personen dabei waren.“ Nach etwa drei Stunden landete das Transportflugzeug mit der ungewöhnlichen Fracht in Memphis in Tennessee.
Shortly after midnight on May 5, Kali began the journey from the Buffalo Zoo, in New York. Accompanied by the Curator for Mammals and Carnivores from the St. Louis Zoo, a veterinarian, and a keeper from the Buffalo Zoo, a FedEx plane completed the first part of the trip. The company had taken control of the logistics of the thing. The transport crate was made of aluminium, and with Kali inside, it was placed directly behind the cockpit wall, so they could monitor Kali throughout the trip. He was given water to drink, and his companions were able to talk to the 2 1/2-year-old polar bear, to calm him if need be. Steve Bircher, the Curator for Mammals and Carnivores at the St. Louis Zoo said: “He did really well,” Bircher said. “It helped to have the handler he’s known the last two years with him.” After about two hours, the cargo jet arrived in Memphis TN with its fragile cargo.
Der zweite der Teil der Reise wurde dann mit einem speziell für solche Transporte ausgestatteten Truck über die Straße durchgeführt. Der Laderaum des LKWs verfügt über eine Klimaanlage, die mit einer Temperatur von 13°C dafür sorgte, dass es Kali nicht zu warm wurde. Auch die Fahrer des Trucks wurden für solche besonders sensible Transportes speziell ausgebildet. Man benötigte rund fünf Stunden für die 460 Kilometer lange Strecke. Gegen 17:00 Ortszeit kam Kali dann in seinem neuen Zuhause im Saint Louis Zoo an.
The second part of the trip was then carried out with a specially equipped cargo truck on the road. The truck was air-conditioned and maintained a temperature of 55°F throughout, so Kali wouldn’t feel overheated. Drivers of such trucks are trained especially how to travel at those temperatures. It took abour five hours to make the 285-mile leg of the journey. At around 5 p.m., local time, Kali arrived at his new home at the St. Louis Zoo.

Er wird zunächst eine 30 Tage dauernde Quarantänezeit hinter den Kulissen hinter sich bringen. Diese Zeit hilft es dem Bären sich an die neue Umgebung und die Menschen, die ihn nun betreuen, zu gewöhnen. Für die Zoobesucher wird er am 6. Juni zu sehen sein, wenn die neue Eisbärenanlage des Zoos eingeweiht wird.
He will first spend the 30-day quarantine period behind the scenes. It will help the bear to settle in his new environment and to get to know his new keepers. For zoo visitors, he will first be on exhibit on June 6, when the zoo’s new polar bear facility is officially opened.
Kali ist der erste Bewohner des „Polar Bear Point“. Mit dem Bau der Anlage wurde im Herbst 2013 begonnen. Sie hat eine Fläche von 3.700 m². Für ihre Errichtung wurden rund 16 Millionen US Dollar (14,3 Mill. Euro) benötigt. Sie ersetzt den veralteten Bärengraben des Zoos.
Kali is the first resident of „Polar Bear Point“. Construction of the facililty was begun in fall 2013. It has an area of .9 acres. It was built at a cost of around $16 million. It replaces the zoo’s older bear pit.
Alle sind froh, dass nach sechs Jahren wieder ein Eisbär im Saint Louis Zoo lebt. 2009 musste die letzte Eisbärin des Zoos, Hope, im Alter von 23 Jahren eingeschläfert werden, da sie an Leberkrebs erkrankt war.
Everyone’s delighted that after six years, there is again a polar bear at the St. Louis Zoo. The last one, Hope, lived here until 2009, when she had to be euthanized at the age of 23, due to liver cancer.
