Knut suffered from a virus infection

Der Zoo Berlin und das Leibniz-Institut für Zoo- und Wildtierforschung (IZW) gaben am Freitag in Berlin bekannt, dass der am 19. März 2011 plötzlich gestorbene Eisbär Knut an einer Virus-Infektion litt. Der Eisbär hatte sich diese Infektion vermutlich bereits vor mehreren Wochen zugezogen. Die Infektion führte zu Entzündungen im Gehirn und im Rückenmark des Tieres, die eine schwere Schädigung hervorrief. Nach dem Zusammenbruch und dem Sturz ins Wasser ist Knut im Zoologischen Garten ertrunken.
The Berlin Zoo and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Reasearch (IZW) announced in Berlin on Friday, that the sudden death of the polar bear Knut on March 19, 2011 was due to a viral infection. The polar bear had already been suffering from this infection for several weeks. The infection caused inflammation in the animal’s brain and and spinal cord that caused massive damage. After the collapse and fall into the water, Knut drowned in the Zoo.
IZW-Präsident Heribert Hofer teilte mit, dass keine Missbildung auf Grundlage von Gen-Defekten entdeckt wurde. Die IZW-Pathologin Claudia Szentiks ergänzte, es gebe auch keine Hinweise auf übermäßigen Stress als mögliche Krankheitsursache. Sie erklärte, dass Knut auch nicht überlebt hätte, wenn er nach seinem Zusammenbruch nicht ins Wasser gefallen wäre, er wäre dann an der Schädigung des Gehirns gestorben. Sie sagte, die spezielle Ursache der Hirnschwellung sei unklar, aber Experten hätten Tollwut, Botulismus und Bovine Spongiforme Enzephalopathie, auch als Rinderwahnsinn bekannt, ausgeschlossen.
IZW President Heribert Hofer explained that no basic defects relating to genetic defects were found. IZW Pathologist Claudia Szentiks added that there was also no indication that stress caused the illness. „Given the massive scale of the inflammation, Knut would probably have died sooner or later – it wouldn’t really have been possible to save him,“ said Claudia Szentiks. She said that the specific cause of the swelling of the brain was unclear, but experts have excluded rabies, botulism, and BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy), also known as „mad cow disease“.
Die Untersuchungen nach dem Erreger können sich noch einige Wochen hinziehen.

Experts did not exclude the possibility that the three females who shared Knut’s enclosure could also be infected.
