Siku ist im Louisville Zoo angekommen

Siku, der fast zweijährige männliche Eisbär aus dem Toledo Zoo, ist sicher am 06. September im Louisville Zoo angekommen. Er wiegt mittlerweile 290 kg.  Louisville hat jetzt drei Eisbären, von insgesamt 79 Eisbären in den Zoos von Nordamerika.

Siku, the almost two-year-old male polar bear from the Toledo Zoo, arrived safely at the Louisville Zoo on September 6.  He now weighs 640 lbs.  Louisville now has three polar bears, that out of 79 polar bears in North American zoos.

Im Louisville Zoo kommt Siku mit der sieben Monate alte Qannik zusammen. Die kleine Bärin wurde auf einem Ölfeld gerettet und kam über den Alaska Zoo nach Louisville. Als dritte Eisbärin ist noch die ältere Eisbärin Arki im Glacier Run zu sehen.

At the Louisville Zoo, Siku will join seven-month-old Qannik.  The little female, rescued by the Alaska Zoo from an oil field, has also come to Louisville.  The third polar bear is the older female Arki, who can be seen in Glacier Run. 

„Siku´s Umzug verlief reibungslos, dank des professionellen Teams des Toledo Zoos“, sagte der Direktor des Louisville Zoo John Walczak. Innerhalb von 30 Minuten nach dem Eintreffen schwamm Siku schon in seinem Becken. Siku wird erst mal nicht im Gehege zu sehen sein, sondern für 30 Tage in Quarantäne gehen. Dies ist die typische Verfahrensweise bei neuen Tieren im Zoo.  Es hat seinen eigenen Bereich mit Schwimmbecken.

„Siku’s move went smoothly, thanks to the professionals at the Toledo Zoo,“ said the Director of the Louisville Zoo John Walczak.  Within 30 minutes of arriving, Siku was already in the pool.  At the moment, Siku is not on display in the exhibit because there is a 30-day quarantine  period.  This is routine for animals new to the zoo.  But he still has a pool in this area.

Ein Zusammenführen von Siku und Qannik wird es aufgrund des Größenunterschiedes vorerst nicht geben.  Siku wurde am 03. Dezember 2009 im Toledo Zoo von der Mutter Chrystal geboren. Vater ist Marty.

They won’t be putting Siku and Qannik together just yet because of their different sizes.  Siku was born to Crystal and Marty on Dezember 3, 2009 at the Toledo Zoo.

„Es ist immer ein wenig traurig, wenn unsere Tiere gehen“, sagte  Dr. Randi Meyerson, Kuratorin für Säugetiere im Zoo Toledo und Koordinatorin für Eisbären in der AZA, „aber das neue Glacier Run in Louisville ist eine ausgezeichnete Anlage mit viel Platz und Beschäftigung. Siku, Qannik und Arki haben dort eine viel versprechende Zukunft. Sie werden eine wichtige Rolle als Botschafter für Eisbären in der Wildnis sein.“

„It is always a bit sad to see one of our animals go,“ said Dr. Randi Meyerson, Curator of Mammals at the Toldo Zoo and Coordinator of polar bear for the AZA.  „But the new Glacier Run inLouisvilleis an outstanding exhibit, with plenty of space and natural habitat.  Siku, Qannik, and Arki have a promising future there.  They will play an important role as ambassadors for polar bears in the wild.“
